Staved Vessel Calculator
Jan 6th, 2013 at 7:04pm

Does anyone know of a spread sheet or calculator program for staved vessels?

I would like to try to turn some but am kind of lost on where to start.  Google only got me something behind a membership wall for another web site.

TIA  smiley=dankk2.gif

Cliff, Send a PM to David Seaba, I believe he does a lot of staved vessels and should have a good resource,

Ron's calculator, here on this site, is a very good one. An easy way to plan them out is to get some graph paper and draw what you're planning to do and then figure the rings out based on the drawing.

My online calculator doesn't do staves . . . yet . . . I've been working on one for about a month now and I've been having a problem with one of the numbers as soon as I get it sorted out I'll publish it

Cliff, can you explain more about what type of stave construction you are looking into. You mentioned salad bowl, are you thinking staved sides and solid bottom or what?

True but you could design it out on grid paper and use the segment calculator to get the dimensions you want for the top and bottom of the staves.

In addition to a calculator, I highly recommend Malcolm Tibbetts book "The Art of Segmented Woodturning."  He gives a great explanation in chapter 10 about the calculations involved in stave construction, and he gives involved descriptions of jigs, cutting, glue-up, turning, etc.

John,

thank you for the suggestion, I have the book but forgot about that chapter.

I am really getting crappy about my research lately.

It is too easy to just go to Google.
