Southwest bowl just completed

This is my second year for segmented bowls. I had some scrap redwood, poplar, walnut and pine laying around. So came up with this bowl. It was also my first real attempt at stacked scrollsaw cutting for the featured ring. The ring was made with to landscape designes glued together. The turning exposed the second layer.

The second bowl is made of curly maple, walnut and cedar. featured ring is a simple zig/zag pattern.

I am not much of a drawer. but I drew out the mesa design, then glued the pattern on to the stock to be cut out on the scrollsaw.

On your landscape design how did you close kerf lines from the scroll saw. I have used the marquetry technique of a double bevel cut but only in thin material and not on a turning.

I can't imagine how much it takes to produce a piece like those. I would imagine after you know what you are doing things would be different but to someone who has never attempted it, it seems quite daunting. smiley=thumbsup.gif

I used a thin blade #5 set at 90 degrees. The stack for the segment was made up of two 1/4 inch thick material, one of cedar, one of walnut. and a second set of walnut and redwood. I added a popular backing to get up to 3/4 total thickness. After cutting I put the matching cedar top with the walnut bottom. I made a jig so I could clamp the two parts togeather on a vise, while keeping the bottom flat. It pulled the parts togeather to eliminate the saw kerf.

I then glued to sets togeather with a backer to get a 3/4 thick segment piece, sanded and the miter cuts.

Hope this is understandable. I am better at showing something than writing how I did it.

It has encourgaed me to continue to develop the landscape theme. I have to admit, segmented bowls and turning is habit forming. This forum has given me a great deal of insite. I am glad I found it.
