Looking for advice on turning Flutes...
Jan 25th, 2013 at 6:30pm

Hey guys I am looking for some advice on turning Rennisance style Flutes, and other wind instruments. Is any one here doing that? I would like to know how to boar the Center hole, I am thinking an auger bit of some sort as well as placement for finger holes.

Thanks,

Curt

there are 2 or 3 folks doing something similar.  I'm sure they will chime in soon and give you some excellent advice.

Curtis.  I make NAF flutes and I use the router method.  I have found that for me it works best.

In responses to an earlier request I made for advice on drilling spindle stock, someone pointed me to a person who made a special jig using a gun drilling bit.  Apparently his results were excellent.

Brendon Stemp in Australia makes recorders.  Here's a link to a video he did on boring the hole

Do you have Trevor Robinson's book?   It is the only one I have seen on the topic.

Trevor left us for the unknown bourne a few years ago, so the revision talked about never will happen.

Amazon still had it for sale last time I checked.

As Louie said I make recorders for a living and as the YouTube video shows, I do the initial bore with twist drill bits.  After that I use specially made reamers that do two things:
1/ Gives the bore a specific taper
2/ Cuts this taper very cleany
The Renaissance recorders had straighter bores and these would be the easiest to copy/make.  THe Baroque recorders are a lot more intricate and demanding on the maker.

I'm sorry I can't offer you any dimensions because I make these under contract to another company but there is a bit of info on the web if you were to search.

Good luck with it.

Curt,

This is one of the best NAF flute making manuals there is.  it walks you through from start to finish.  Lots of practical  (not theory) information on hoe placement sound  hole making etc.
I made flutes for a couple of years before finding this and could not believe the way it took the quality of my work to the next level.

The manual Len recommends is well worth the price. It not only covers construction with scads of photos, but also demystifies hole placement & tuning.
