Very good job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Smiley

Can you describe how you made it, or is that a trade secret? Smiley

Dan J.

No trade secret.  I mounted a disk of walnut and trued it up.  I indexed the lathe and cut 12 dovetail slots with a 3/4 14 degree dovetail bit.  (It helps to make a cut with a 3/8 straight bit and then go back with the dovetail.)  I then parted off a ring from the disk with dovetails alread cut.

I mounted the roughed and dried platter and trued it up.  Then I indexed the platter and cut the 12 dovetails.  I then aligned the ring and slipped the tenons into the groves.  I went back and glued the tenons one at a time.  I finished turning and sanded after the glue dried.

Excellent Roger.  I like it.  Ed talks about segmenting the rim.  That might be the one idea that I might suggest as well.  Making the rim the same wood as the main platter would be another.  The splines contrasting with both the body and the rim would lend to a pretty cool effect.  You have really come along.  I'm loving seeing what you come up with next.
Cool

Doug, I may try cutting 12 pieces for the rim on the next one.  I can start my indexing by centering the splines on the joints.  That would hide all of the glue joints on the top side, plus it would help to reinforce the glue joints.

I really like that!  It looks like the bowl has a guard rail.

Thanks everyone.  I gave the platter to my pastor who retired last Sunday after 29 years at First Baptist, Cullman, AL.
