A little different platter
Feb 4^th, 2013 at 6:17pm

Maple platter with a detached (floating, negative space, ?) walnut rim. Rim is attached by 12 dovetail splines. Platter is 13.5 inches in diameter. No finish at this time. I still have some hand sanding on the walnut rim. Any possibilities here?

I think this is an absolute winner. Great work, great idea.

I would do two things with your next one (I hope there is a next one).

1/ use another contrasting timber for the splines. They look great against the lighter timber but are a little lost on the same coloured timber.
2/ The step in the rim is not needed. It confuses what you are doing with the splines. It looks as though there is another join in the wood/rim other than those created by the splines.

I would love to see another. I reckon you're onto a good thing here.

Brendan, Thanks for the feedback. I struggled with both issues. I thought about cherry for the splines, but did not want to introduce a third color.

I started removing the step out of the rim, but decided that it looked good with the step.

There will be others. Probably the same wood for the rim with a contrasting color for the splines. I thought about doing one and leaving the splines a little proud. May do one and not glue the splines. This would allow pushing the splines out into the rim and removing the rim.

Awesome job. Wouldn't change anything on that one.

How about if the splines started in the center and radiated out. Each would be a wedge that was maybe twice the width of the "spoke" that holds the rim. Think arrowhead and a bit of the arrow shaft that would then hold the rim. Alternate the wedges dark and light till you have your circle but the spline wedges would be narrower.

Hope that ramble made sense. But believe me it looks good in my head smiley=thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to think about that. I think it would be a nightmare to cut,fill and glue.

Roger, I really like the floating rim on this and now for the but.
This type of construction is usually done with segments to achieve better grain alignment.
In the first photo you have long grain to long grain at 3 and 9 o'clock and cross grain at 6 and 12 o'clock, which by itself is not that big of a deal but does have the potential to crack in those areas. Even if it does not crack, you may notice a change in the joint, a slight bump or depression due to changes in climate.
I like the piece, I only mention these things as a caution or warning.
