5500 Member Wood Trade!
Feb 15th, 2013 at 12:26am

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!

You asked for it, you got it.

Announcing a new wood trade to celebrate reaching 5500 members.  We have gained 500 new members since Nov 1st!
WOW!!
It took only 101 days to add 500 more members!
Ladies and gentlemen, YOU are the reason Woodturners Resource exists.  Since we have reached this incredible count we want to celebrate by having a wood trade.

Here is how it works.
Go to the post office and obtain a flat rate box.(they are free)
Post in this thread and Send me a PM with your mailing address and any woods you are allergic to.
You must designate whether you want to trade a MEDIUM or LARGE flat rate box, or One or More of Either or Both! I will be keeping 2 lists, one for Medium, and another for Large.
Cut some of your local wood to shape and size so that it will fill that box.
Just after the deadline I will send out the name and address of the person you will send your box to.  Get your box in the mail and then sit back and wait for a similar box to arrive at your house.

Names will be put into a name randomizer to assign who you will send wood to.  Once those names are announced, you may either simply surprise your recipient or contact them via PM to see what their preferences are and then fill their desires.  Personally, I prefer surprises and will have my box filled long before the names are drawn.

So, get your names and addresses to me via PM, fill those boxes, and let the games begin.

Deadline to have names and addresses in:  Monday, 3/4/13, midnight CST
Recipients to be announced no later than:    Tuesday, 3/5/13
Wood in the mail no later than:                     Tuesday, 3/12/13

IMPORTANT!!  PLEASE READ!!  There are lots of creepy crawlies that have infested much of our wood here in the USA.  Because of that fact, borders have tightened on raw wood.  Even within the country I understand that the PO is watching things a bit more closely.  Besides we don't want to be responsible for the spread of insects that can devastate our supply of raw material.  I would ask that everyone PLEASE remove all bark from your wood. Do NOT send any Walnut or Ash. Both woods are under quarantine.  Do NOT ship any wood that has obvious borer presence.

I would further suggest that you fully tape all the seams and corners of the box so that any critters that do make it through your diligent inspection will be contained until it arrives at its destination.  If you used a sealer on the end grain, place the wood inside a plastic bag in the box.

Unfortunately, this trade will be restricted to inside the borders of the USA.  (So sorry to have to do this    Cry )

Let's do some trading!

I'll send a large box.
sending pm

what's usually the preference? 1 large piece of wood, or several smaller pieces? I have a couple of large oak and birch trees that I cut down 2+ years ago, I could trim one up to fit in a box, or put some smaller pieces of different wood in, including some from an apple tree that got damaged last year.

Dave, it usually depends on who you are sending it too.  Some have small lathes and really prefer the many pieces of different species boxes.  Those of us who have larger lathes really like the one solid piece boxes.  You could check with the person you are sending wood to, or you could pack a box and send what ever it is that you've packed regardless.  Those who have larger lathes can use the smaller pieces for small projects or finials or what ever comes to mind.  Those with small lathes can cut the larger pieces down and use the left overs for pens, finials, knobs, etc.  So I guess it really doesn't matter.  Roll Eyes
