After reading some user comments on the Internet about Square Intuit and Paypal I decided to use my local bank service.  It also provides a smartphone reader free of charge, and has lower percentages per sale, but does include $12/month fixed fee.  What swayed me was a number of users who were suddenly dropped by Square and one of the others, and their funds held for 90 days.  Apparently the processors fear transaction patterns that may be for sales of guns and ammunition, prostitution, and other illegal activities.  I couldn't afford the risk that funds might be frozen, as my sales levels and amounts will be erratic.  Others have found Square and the others wonderful.  I marked up all my prices 4% to try to cover cost of data plan and processing fees.

I haven't had any trouble with Square in 2 years of using the service, other than losing the reader and having to get another one at Staples for $10.

I dropped ProPay because their $60 annual fee was too much and they were asking $50 for the smartphone reader after I had paid $120 for their MicroSecure reader.  Now it is only $50, but they want $20 for a smartphone reader or $100 for the Flash reader.
