Howdy:
My first dye job with fabric dye was not that successful. These two dye projects turned out a bit better, this time I used liquid aniline dyes mixed with alcohol rather than water, the dyes went on smoothly, there was no precipitate and I used alcohol instead of water which appears to eliminate "raising of the grain" on the finished product.

The purple heart / yellow heart / maple was a standard segmented project with no dye.

They're not really true Hollow Forms, as I made them in halves and glued them together.

I'd welcome any comments but particularly on the dye, my choice of colors or on the shapes of the hollow forms, or frankly anything else you might have to offer.

Thanks as usual to folks who run this forum and of course all the great supporters.

cheers

Bob

I'll start of by saying I'm not a fan of dying wood, but I like the effect that was achieved on the tall vessel. It has a woven, or basket like look to it.

This is one of the reasons why I don't use water based finishes.
Nice collection, keep up the good work.
What type of wood are the dyed pieces made from?

I like the middle picture, color and shape.  I came back to it several times to view it.  The yellow heart has a nice color.  The boards we get here in Texas must be seconds or thirds!

The advantage to using water over alcohol is water based dyes are more light fast, meaning they don't fade as much or as quickly.

One thing I noticed on two of your pieces is that the top rim is dead flat. Try sloping a little them next time.

This is a common way to do a segmented hollow forms. The first time I did this I thought I was cheating too.

I used maple for the vases Ed.

Ron,   are you suggesting tapering the top rim,  but not quite to a sharp edge?

thanks

Yes, that's what I'm suggesting. The outside edges should still be rounded over
