Cutting Segments By Hand ?
Apr 13th, 2013 at 9:45am

I am new to Woodturning, and reading as much as I can, espically on Segmentation Turning. Is it possible to cut precision segments by hand ? has anyone on this Forum, cut their segments by hand?if so,what type of Saw and Jig did they use to achieve their cuts? I see, that some of the Japenese Hand Saws, are highly praised, for there accuracy and precision, and there high standard of production.Look forward to comments.     Kindly Paul

Anything is possible, I'm sure you are aware that a segmented turning may have hundreds, maybe even a thousand pieces.

Have you ever hand cut dovetails before?

There is nothing keeping you from cutting segments by hand, although it is time consuming. You will most likely need touch the up the cut with some type of abrasive either powered or by hand.
If you go this route you are probably looking for a miter box.
here is one example. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Well, they are just down the road from me in Portland, OR. I would think that they would ship, but I think they sell mostly in house. Here is a link. Their stuff is as good as money can buy. Very high end.

Based on the age of the youtube video above they've been looking for enough interest since 2008.

For that kind of cash, I would have a shiny new Delta Unisaw.

That is some machine.  You would have to build your shop around it so you could use it to its potential.

The marketing video actually says you could work inside the house without waking your family.

But one only needs a good quality miter box and a well tuned miter saw.  Old miller falls miter boxes and a matching saw with fine teeth and minimal set will cut a lot of segments for much less cash flow.   Perhaps $100 max with a disston saw.

A shooting board with a clamp and a sharp plane will clean the surface.
