Wine barrel

I am planning on making a "barrel" with a wine bottle insert.
My daughter's in-laws are wine makers and I want to make it for the holidays.
I have barrel staves from their wine.
How do I cut them so that they will come together, I plan to use 16 pieces ( same as in their full sized barrel)?

Ron has one for sale for a few bucks.  Don't know how well it works.

Jeff, I have used the sled at turnedwood.com.  It's the compound miter sled.  The instructions are clear and it worked like a champ.  Malcolm Tibbits book also has instructions for staves of various sizes.   A straight staved vessel is the easiest.  You just cut longer segments.

Set your table saw (with a clean sharp blade) to 11 1/4 degrees.  This needs to be exact.  Trail and error to dial it in.  Use Ron's segment calculated to determine the long edge length for the diameter barrel you want.  The rest is up to you for length.  For straight staves I like to tape them together apply the glue and use rubber bands and hose clamps.  I have a recorded the process for the construction of my Red Cryptex.  I'll try to get it up this weekend.

Here is a link to a thread where there are pics of just what you're trying to do. My example is an ornament, but it's a 16 piece staved cylinder, so there is no differance.
Just as Walt mentioned, be as precise as possible with your angles.

As long as both openings are the same the online segment calculator will work. If the openings are different sizes then the Stave Calculator would work better.

Tibbets published an article in the 2007 American Woodturner on a stave coffee mug using a stainless steel liner.   The wine cooler liners are similar but larger.   You might look at the article for some process continuity ideas

Walt,
That was very informative. What is the width of the jig?

The width is not important it is long enough to hold the stock securely.  What is important if the blade angle and getting right can be tidious.  The fence is adjustable for different sized staves and have room for the clamps.
