Dennis please post some pic's of these 20" bowls you have been making I would love to see them. I make fairly large bowls and like what has been mentioned I use doug's 3/4" deep V bowl gouge for roughing and a 1/2" gouge for turning out the insides.I have never needed anything larger but I usually only make 16" bowls. The larger ones don't really sell for me.

I am not trying to sell yet Breck.  Maybe someday but for now, this is all an experiment.  I'll get pix up soon.

Just my opinion, but...I turn on a 25" lathe (inboard) and have maxed it out a few times. Roughing with a nice sharp 5/8th D-Way bowl gouge is plenty for me. Particularly with wet wood. A friend loaned me his 3/4" gouge (Crown, I think) - in the hopes that I'd buy it from him. No sale. It's a beast, and, at least for me, overkill. I'll let it gather dust in his shop.
I can take a huge shaving with a good sharp 5/8. once the corners are knocked off - a couple of minutes at most, the going smoothes out.
If you're getting knocked around, experiment with tool angles and presentation, keep the rest in close and relax. Watch either Dave Schweitzer's or Lyle Jamieson's videos on roughing out. It's not supposed to be that much work. Lyle demos using only finger-tips. The tool is supposed to do the work.

I had the original Veri-grind and when I bought my 3/4" BG it wouldn't fit into the jig.  I ended up buying the Sharpfast  jig which I prefer to the veri-grind.  I think that you could fit a 1" into it.

I know that I bought my 3/4" Sorby BG at the local Woodcraft store a couple of years ago.

Cry just measured the verigrind.  It is just a hair over 3/4".  I'll look for a 3/4 BG.

I found the Sorby 3/4" bowl gouge on the Woodcraft site.  Has anyone used this gouge?  The only experience I have with Sorby is with their Hollow Master but that has a carbide tip.
