segmented = magic eye

Just wondering if anyone else has ever noticed some segmented work also reacts like those magic eye puzzles or drawings? fyi The magic eye drawings are the ones that you stare at then a 3d image pops out. I have always been good and fast at making those pop. I did a segmented platter with 1/2" squares (like a checker board) make from cherry and maple.
I was looking at it and then I seen it was going to pop and it did. What was cool is the checker board pattern became the background and the grain was the foreground with a 12" separation feeling.  I may try to photograph it and see if it carries onto the picture.

Jerry, I know what you are referring to and they have a great visual effect.
To achieve the 3-D effect you really need 3 different woods as in the pic I linked to.

I made this bowl back in 2008.  The rim detail was a painful exercise but worth every minute!

The work of M. C. Escher  comes to mind.  Great to see folks doing it with wood.  Mathematics, art and turning all in one.

Have not attempted any segmented turnings. Is there a book that describes the techniques used to make these "magic eye" pieces? Like the one shown by Ed Weber.

While not about turning look up books on marquetry to get yourself started

Quilters use the same pattern and call it "tumbling blocks".
