Great turning Don!  Always enjoy little bird houses and snowmen...  Is the Snowman made out of 'Holly' or???  I've not had very good luck with Holly...seems to easily crack and split before I can dry it... :>(  Pretty wood though and your little Snowman box(s) are just about perfect!  Thanks for sharing and safe turning to you this New Year!!! Thumbs Up

Kenn, you are correct... the snowman is made of American Holly. If you look at the PDF file I sent, I list one source that I have used. I may just have been lucky so far, but the Holly I have played with has all been good to turn and (so far) nothing has cracked, split, or warped. Of course that could be because I order wood, throw it on the shelf when it comes in... and then forget I have it. By the time I find it again... it's had ample time to dry and adjust to the shop environment.

I'm glad everyone seems to like my little last minute work... I must admit that my "inspiration" was all of the wonderful little birdhouse ornaments and snowmen that so many of our members have done before me. (In other words, I very shamelessly "borrow" ideas anywhere I can find them then do what I can to put a personal touch on them. So... my thanks to all the great turners and their examples!!!)

I thought I was the only one who did that.

Don, thank you and those are nice works! Showed my wife and now as soon as it warms up, it's off to the shop to make snowmen.  Glenn J.

That snowman is really neat.  I've turned a few solid but never hollowed any out.  This gives me some ideas to try.  I'm sure they won't turn out as good as yours. Thanks for the instructions.  You did a great job on all of these.

Thanks for the PDF plans.  Like others, I like the idea of hollowing the snowman.

I've never used holly so wonder what the special draw is.  Might it be that the wood is clear grained and white?  If so, have you ever tried hackberry?  Probably not as tight grained but very light colored.  Just thinking of another option for wood.

You are correct, Jerry...I liked the Holly for both of the reasons you listed. The only Hackberry I have had to play with was some very spalted (almost punky) wood from a tree a friend cut down. It was not very white. You could probably use Ash or Maple also.

Nope.  I have wood I bought for a as-yet-not-attempted project I bought in 1989.  I found it again when we moved to Texas.  Seven years ago.  I found the drawings too when we unpacked.  I wonder where I put them...
