Source for bottle opener hardware
Jan 8th, 2014 at 11:00pm

I would like to start my first turning project, a bottle opener.

Beside Woodcraft and Craft Supplies USA, can someone recommend a source for bottle openers?

Thanks,

Ken

STWOODSHOP on etsy. I know the guy who runs that shop and  I am almost sure he has some. If not listed ask him because sometimes he does not keep everything posted. I think his price was cheeper that wood turnings but not sure

I've made bottle openers using components from the hardware store.  That costs a lot less than buying 'turning kits'.

One option is to buy the flat metal openers.  They usually are come in blister packs of two and cost less than $2.00 per pair.  Each opener is double ended - a can opener at one end, and bottle opener at the other.  I just cut off the can opener.

The challenge is devising a way to insert the flat blade into the turned handle.  The approach I have used is to drill a hole in the end of the turning that is large enough to accommodate the width of the blade.  Then, using epoxy, I glue some small blocks of wood on the faces of the blade.  After the glue cures, I use a rasp to round those blocks of wood to form a dowel that slips into the hole (with a little glue to keep it there).

The other approach is to buy one of those wire paint can openers (some paint stores give them away).  Cut off the spade end of the opener, leaving only the oval 'handle' - which happens to be designed to serve double duty as a bottle opener.  Drill a hole in the turned handle to accommodate the wire, and glue it in.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Louie, I went to HD and bought a few of their can/bottle openers as you suggested and wil make a few for myself.  Then after those prototypes I will spring for the fancy ones for gifts to the family & friends.

Great ideas.

The kits from WC and CS are one piece. The opener has a long (1"-1.25") threaded shaft that simply screws into the wood. When epoxied in, this makes a very secure connection. I have been using CS openers for several years of home testing  Roll Eyes and they work great. The WC look very similar.
The PSI openers are made just like a pen or any other 7mm project. I have not tried these because it doesn't look like it would hold up to normal wear and tear. The opener end simply screws into a pressed in fitting, even if glued, I don't think it would hold up.
tip: read the instruction sheets before you buy
Hope this helps

I've been buying from Ruth Niles for years. Everyone loves them. High quality, good price and Ruth is wonderful to talk with.

Good luck, Mike

Oops! I read that wrong, thought you were after bottle stoppers.

I buy paint can openers with the bottle opener on the other end.

I cut off the flared paint can opener end, then drill a hole big enough in the newly turned handle and epoxy them in.

I usually get them for free at the local paint store, but if I have to buy them I get them for about 50c each.
