My first hollow form

5" W x 7" H Sapele hollow form.
Well I can finally say I have done a hollow form. I did about everything wrong in learning, but the Lord blessed I was able to finish it without a major problem. Starting with kiln dried wood without any skills wasn't probably a good idea but my monster articulating system worked exceptionally well. I still have to add another coat of finish to give it a shine but this is with the sealer on it.

Breck, great start to your HF production. Just a couple of things: 1) green wood works soooooo much better. Either turn it to finish or rough turn just like a green rough turned bowl, 2) when you do your first HF you're not suppose to embellish it with anything!!!! It puts the rest of us to shame Roll Eyes

The Monster Hollower is a great tool. Just like all of the other things we do in turning, this tool also increases the vortex. Grin

Now you need to make or purchase a ring shaped steady rest. It really helps when you start turning larger pieces. I can also tell that you did some research on picking a shape. Nice Grecian shape. GREAT job and looking forward to seeing more in the near future.

Chuck/Paul the dark areas are burnt textured bands, I used two different home made burning tips for the bottom to give it a lace type look. One a coiled wire burning tip the other a spiral wire tip. I wanted the bottom to have some color to give it a lift off the table look.

Wish my first was that good. I like the banding also. I have only one comment though. And it is only ment to help improve skills. This could also be just the picture. It appears that the bottom 1/4 of the curve flattens out. Continuing the curve will help raise the bottom also.

Walt I noticed the same thing when I was turning the outside but I guess I was afraid of making the foot to small (I didn't plan ahead) so I didn't continue the curve like I should have. I agree totally with what you said. I saw a couple of other things I will change on the next one to improve as far as form goes. It really is different from turning bowls I will have to get used to it over time. But it is fun!!!!!!! woo woo
