Micarta for segmented turnings?
Apr 3rd, 2014 at 4:29pm

Does anyone have experience using micarta material as part of a segmented bowl?  Micarta is a laminated material and can be made at home with colored construction paper and resin.  I was considering making my own micarta material with colored paper (for a feature ring).  But I don't know if regular wood glue (Titebond) would adhere to the micarta (resin).

I've only used epoxy with micarta.  There's only one way to find out if a PVA will work, and that's to try it.  Or you could use epoxy on the joints.

Denny Edwards did a bowl with a paper ring accent. The link to his movie is here

I'm not sure if this is the process you are referring to, but it can't hurt to look.   Smiley

Julian --  I have only had success with epoxy with resins --  and resin infused paper is still resin surfaces.  Some use CA to glue resins with small items like pens and bottle stoppers, but those joints are brittle and weak in shear.

Dennis Keeling and Malcolm Tibbetts are both using epoxy in the published materials.

The above is a bowl from a board constructed with resin infused pen blanks -- and it uses epoxy.   Tibbetts is a tight bond user where he can.   His wooden segmented work is Tight Bond II.

Depends on the resin you use, I use Silmar 41, it's a polyester casting resin and glues exceptionally well with Gorilla Glue, if you have trouble with full penetration you can thin the resin 10% with styrene. I don't need to say that this is nasty stuff and all the safety precautions of working with resins apply. It cures much harder than epoxy and can be polished to a brilliant shine.

Grant, I've seen the Denny Edwards video but wasn't too keen on hold the paper rings with screws.
Ken; thanks for the link.
Freddie, thanks for the tip.  Have not worked with resins before.

Julian: Sorry about that. I forgot that Denny did not glue the paper.

Chuck: I only use FF and the link works for me. If you want to see Denny's videos, you can try just going to home page and navigating from there. Also, the videos do not start automatically. When the video window opens, you need to click the "play" arrow in the lower left corner of the video window.
