Marketing FOG wood.....
Apr 18th, 2014 at 1:39pm

I was wondering how you guys market your FOG or unidentified wood.  Here lately I've been getting a tremendous about of wood that I'm getting from the sides of roads after folks trim trees.  I have no idea what most of this stuff is and I reckon it's a bit tacky to just say "for sale wood bowl".  Personally I would want to know what kind of wood it is, and most of my customers buying pens want to know what their pen is made from.

I have two books on tree ID, but on some of these the bark is already stripped and I don't want to be that guy coming on here every week asking folks to ID my wood for me.  Most of these trees I just have no clue what the heck it is.  Frustrating to say the least.

When you plain just can't ID some wood, how can you market it?

Derek

One thing you could do is identify the location it came from and note that while you don't know what it is, you saved it from being burned / going to the dump.

Call it "North American Hardwood" or NAH for short.

Since you found it on the road call it "Roadside American Wood"

Or even "Salvaged American Wood"

It is wood from the rare Dunno tree.

I've found that some people like a story about the wood if it's unknown.  Kinda like..  "Well I really don't know what kind it is because it was part of pile of wood that was about to be turned into firewood (mulch, etc) and I could hear it screaming 'Help!! Help!!  I'm really a bowl (peppermill, platter, etc) and I've been trapped in this log by an evil witch (or warlock depending on who you're talking to).' So I did the right thing and freed it from the spell."

R Bruce Hoadley's book on identifying wood is something of a bible although very technical.  With a low power hand lens and planed end grain you might be able to narrow down the choices.  But it is very technical with lots of explanation of the various cells in trees, appearance, arrangement, and so on.

Good book, my daughter sent me this image as a joke and when I told her I have that book she couldn't stop laughing

I recall the Smithsonian has a website that lets you identify trees using pics of leaves, bark, wood, and seed. Called something like leaf or similar name. Its free for the looking.

Unfortunately it doesn't help with wood ID unless you know what the leaves, flowers, or fruit looks like.

This is one of the better sources I use for getting some ideas of the family of woods

This helps me appreciate the variation in colors and grain within the same species.

Note that the local names are often not specific enough to help much.   Ironwood covers a lot of species with the specifics more limited by where you are at for meaning.   North Eastern parts of north America it tends to be hop hornbeam, Florida grows some Lignum, and the southwest has it's own flavors of ironwoods.

The term "Cedar" is another jumble.

I'm sitting in the same boat, hauling wood mostly from the Garden Refuse and the not knowing is quite frustrating. I have acquired five books by now, including Hoadley's, but identifying wood is difficult, as there are just so many (similarities).
I decided to play the recycle/repurpose card (with a story attached to it if possible), hoping people will appreciate it.

by  me there are several "urban loggers"  they sell a lot of really nice wood from  jobs in the  city at a local  recycling center.  every once in  awhile  they  have a  box if wood that is  just labels  reclaimed lumber.  just putting the "reclaimed" moniker on it   makes it sell  faster.  If  they  would cal it "unknown scrap" it would sit there till someone  needed fire wood.   I'm thinking  of something like  "reclaimed urban  lumber" or "up cycled wood"
