needing a LARGE bowl blank
May 30th, 2014 at 10:52pm

In need of a dry or semi dry Cherry or Walnut bowl blank for a customer who needs a new bread making and rising bowl.

She wants it at least 12 inches in diameter and approximately 8 inches deep.

Any suggestions or ideas anyone??
Jim you seem to ALWAYS have something to say every time I post anything?

I would hazard a guess that you won't be able to find a dry or even semi-dry bowl blank in that thickness.  It seems a rather odd proportion of diameter to depth.  Your best bet would be to try to find someone with a bowl that has been roughed out that they would be willing to part with.

I do have one rough out in black walnut that will finish out between 7" and 8" high but the diameter will be in the 18" range, not 12".

This bowl was roughed out last August but since I covered it completely with Anchorseal it is not dry yet.  The scale I use to weigh my bowls only goes up to 11 lbs. and this one is off scale right now.  There is a shallow split beside the tenon that looks like it should be able to be turned away since it does not show at all on the inside.

I have finish turned a couple of bowls this size from the same log.  I have put them back on the lathe and basically done a second rough turning to true them up and remove the Anchorseal, then started weighing them and watching for checks.  Any checks that start I immediately hit with thin CA to stop them from growing.  That has been successful on the ones I have finished so far and I was able to remove the shallow checks during the final turning.  The last one took about 2 months to finish drying after I cut the Anchorseal off of it and new checks stopped appearing after the first week.

The big problem is that I am in Canada and you are in Texas, so shipping would likely be prohibitive for something of this size and weight.

Take care
Bob

If the customer would accept mesquite you should be able to find green mesquite there in TX.  I brought a blank back in April that would make a bowl that big.  I got it from a dealor N of Austin.  Green mesquite, as you probably know can be final turned with little or no warping

Bob thise bowls are fantastic and yes they would work quite well. I agree that shipping could be prohibitive.

I will see if I can find a mesquite blank big enough and send her pics and seed how she likes it.
I had NOT considered mesquite at al since her preferred wood(s) are dark and Cherry.

Thank you very much for your input.

Don't think you'd be able to ship Black Walnut anyway--lots of restrictions.
The good thing about Mesquite is that it doesn't have to be dry--is a very stable wood.
I'll look, but don't think I have any slabs cut that deep.
Feel free to message me.  I'm in Cuero btw, about ~ 10 hrs from you.

Jim around here thats almost true, up here in the north west part, (the panhandle)we are the Texas step children. It is 5 hours to Dallas Ft worth. (south)

We have very very few trees or vegetation other than tumbleweeds and some buffalo grass.

Hi Denis, I couldn't help but comment on your comment about being 5 hours from Dallas, heck for me to get to Thunder Bay I got to travel at least 18 hours and the shortest route is through Michigan and yet I am still in my province of Ontario.

Dirk, Ontario is a very large territory.
Is it as remotely populated as west Texas?

If it is all all urban sprawl as is most of lower Michigan traveling can be even more challenging due to the abundance of traffic and various constructions etc....
I know that it takes close to 18 hours (the last time I did it many years ago) to drive from here to the Texas mexican border in the Lower rio Grande valley around brownsville and Harlingen.

Dennis,
I got back from a CME meeting this afternoon and went to a log that I have that I thought would supply a blank or two.  Well it had an unexpected void in the middle--dang it.
I did go ahead and cut a blank, hopefully the pics made it on message. (nope)  It's a nice piece of wood, don't see any "shake" or twists.  Might have a small grub or two, but that's mesquite.
Unfortunately it won't make the 8 inch depth all the way around, but It is 13 in across--not 12.
I can't get images to go on, if you'll PM your email I'll send them.

I might be able to look at some more mesquite later this week--just depends on work, etc  Wink
