Seeking method to turn a victrola horn
Jul 17th, 2014 at 10:44pm

I did NOT turn the victrola cone in this picture, but have done some stacked segmented turning in similar shapes.  Is the method shown here still considered segmented?

The small end is around 3 inches in diameter and the large open horn is at least 12 inches, maybe 14.

I just can't wrap my head around the initial wood cutting and glue up.  Would appreciate any advice.  Guessing that it is 100 years old...

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Jim

That would be considered Stave construction.

Yep, staves (glue-up sort of like this: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register).   Alternatively, you could try making them out of one piece of wood, like wooden lampshades (Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register)

Actually its compound stave construction.  Meaning small at one end and big at the other.  Other than a different type of cutting jig the process is the same.  It looks like it has 12 pieces in the picture.  You can have any number you like though.

I can't help but wonder is there is some bent lamination in that cone. If not you're going to need some thick oak to turn that.

I'm sure you're correct Ron. IMO, if you look at the grain you can see(at least it looks that way to me) that it's bent and not cut to the horn shape. Sometimes this is a veneer in order to hide the internal construction.
Several jigs are required to construct this shape.
First is a bending form to laminate the layers.(i believe these single pieces steam bent on some)
A Band saw sled to cut the compound staves.
Do-nut type clamping forms for the glue-up
A steady rest for the lathe.

This is a bit of a lost art, info on how they were constructed might be difficult to find.
You might try contacting one of the restoration shops for some insight.

Really impressed that this has lasted 100 years! If it was steam bent, might it also be true that the joints were hand-planed before glue up? This is way beyond my talant level. a dream really...

thanks!

Thanks for the excellent replies:

Ron:  your link mentions veneer cases but I don't see anything about horns.

Don:  very interesting patent link.  I found a picture that appears to use the veneer method.  Seeing the differences, it makes me wonder if the horn in my original post is veneer or not.

I don't know about the Victor brand, but the horn on my grandmother's Edison used solid wood staves.  I know because the movers crushed it after we cleaned out her house.

That was 45 years ago, and I have no idea what happened to it after it got to my uncle's house.
