Please what kind of wood is this?
Sep 12th, 2014 at 9:05am

The electric company cut down a tree on my property. Not to tall about 25-30 ft high and only 12 -15 inches in diameter. As soon as I saw the wonderful colors of the wood I grabbed what little was usable and made a couple of bowls. Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is?? This is the same bowl shot on three sides to show the color.

Ben -

The answer may vary depending on where you live.

My generic guess is manitoba maple aka boxelder.   Member of the same family as the maples.

If so, the red fades with time.....

Nice bowl!

Yup, the red flame is a good indicator of the box elder, which is a soft maple. Weeds up there, rare out here on the west coast. We don't get as much of the red in ours. The red does fade to a brown color with exposure to air and UV light. It is not spaulting, but a fungus or microbe type thing. It can be pretty sour/stinky some times.

If  it is light that is fading the color, what about a Satin UV polyurethane?

Very Interesting topic, I thought I knew our Ohio trees quite well  Smileyand today Box Elder is thrown out there and is new to me. A lil research showed me it's a Maple and I have various Maples all around me and now after seeing the leaf ID I'll have to find the Box Elder. I also see it has the tell tale Helo Seed Pods also which will help to locate .

I think that's it! And yes I used a poly that claimed to protect from the UV light.
Thanks
