Swamp Kauri box/jar/container
Oct 9th, 2014 at 6:25pm

This is my first turning that has really come out the way I wanted so I thought I'd share and get some tips. The wood is swamp Kauri which I just found out can only be exported from New Zealand as a finished product, so pretty cool I get to work with it. The inside is a bit rough, but I was struggling to cut it any smoother with the end of the chisel being so far from the tool rest. Finished just with some Linseed oil.

they've started marketing it out as a wood product...I picked up a block at WoodCraft last year....haven't been brave enough to put it to the lathe yet...   it's supposed to be over several thousand years old, which, as an amateur archeologist, makes it pretty intimidating....

Did some more research, stump or root material can also be exported. Probably would have been more hesitant to put in on the lathe if I had known more about it beforehand haha.
