The amount of dust that migrates into the house is negligible. We have a much greater problem with dog hair than wood dust. You mentioned bringing in 220 volt service. I have 110 volt and do fine with that. Keep the AC vent, you will want it in the summer.

Here's another thought. As I'm building my shop, I decided to run all of the electrical outside the interior walls at the top of the wall in conduit into junction boxes every so often so I can drop down and set an outlet wherever I want.

Just run some conduit on the walls and ceiling to where ever you need it. No need to trash any sheet rock.

Dwight--I have to have 220 service because my lathe, the dust collector, and the bandsaw all require it.

Ralph-- I considered using conduit as well and will likely go that rout. The one thing I was thinking was that it would be much easier for me to run a sub panel from the main. I was just thinking of going this way because of the amount of 220 and 110 outlets I would like to have /need.

I'm going downstairs with the wife in about an hour (I had to make an appointment LOL) to see if she will let me have that piece of real estate, if she douse I will start construction today

For the Electrical I am going to run a sub panel in the basement from our main box. Keep the ac vent so long as it isn't a fresh air intake you will be fine. plus during the summer you will like it a lot. also Running conduit is a good Idea, I will be doing the same

Good Luck and remember to make the Argument that it will be far cheaper and faster, to build the shop in the existing space, which means you can get her those finished Items that much sooner Wink

I had my appointment with Jess (the boss) and she said I could have the basement space. As a matter of fact, she decided it would be better for the rest of the house if the were 2 doors between my dust and her house, so she actually said I could bump the wall out another foot or so. Shocked

The added room will bump me to 14'7"x10'10" (~158 square feet) Thumbs Up

I'm starting construction tomorrow, oh and one of the cool things, my Father owned a huge scrap metal business and has already told me he has enough wire to rewire my house 1000 times over, so that is one cost I will not have to worry about. The other cool thing is my brother-in law owned an electrical company and has already said he would come down and knock everything out in a day. Family is such a great thing, now if I just had someone else that could do sheet rock...

That's a place for another tool. I think all folks with a small shop would very much like that extra elbow room at the least. I would hook up the basement.

So I have been hard at work getting this shop up and going. I have the walls studded, electrical nearly complete, and almost all the sheetrock is done (it will be done tomorrow). I have been working on it almost every night. I took some advice about the electrical and actually got a licensed electrician to come out and put a blessing on what I did and have to do. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. The toughest part is having to deal with the 12' ceiling. The issue is that in a couple of places I can't get a ladder close enough to the wall to do much of anything... I sort of solved this problem by borrowing my Father's Little Giant ladder. The next big hurdle will be texturing the walls (all the walls in my house are textured and have round corners). I've watched several videos on the topic and I bought the hopper gun to do it, so I'll practice a bit the go to town.

I understand that the rest of the house has textured walls, but I don't think that's ideal for a turning shop.

Maybe just put on an extra layer of paint to help hide any imperfections and leave a smooth surface for the shop. Texturing will not be expected by a future buyer in what is obviously set up as a work area.

So here's where I'm at. The outside (hall) walls have to have to be textured to match the basement, inside the shop I'm going to mud and tape the drywall and put a coat of primer on it. I can't do anything about the 3 walls that are textured... guess I'll just have to live with the dust.
