Finish over dye
Jan 1st, 2015 at 11:00pm

I just finished a maple burl hollow form that I have dye blue with Chestnut Spirit Dye (alcohol base).  I have used lacquer on some of my dyed platters but want to try something different. (To cold to spray outside.)  Can I use a wipe on poly once the dye has dried/cured? If so, how many coats should I put on to get a really good gloss?

Steve -  I like a thin seal coat of shellac over the dye.   It keeps solvents in the poly from mobilizing the dye.  Spray can with a light coat or two.

After the shellac cures overnight, the wipe on poly until you build the surface you want.   I use scotch brite pads to cleanup nibs every few coats.

Ken, thanks for the heads up on the spray shellac.  After I first read your response I thought I would just wipe on some cut dewaxed shellac since I spraying is not one of my better skills.  Then I started thinking about it and realized that the alcohol in the shellac would also mobilize the dye.  So, I guess today I go to the big box and pick up a spray can of shellac.

Steve - Happy New Year.
I used EEE-Ultrashine and 2 coats of Shellawax over Artisan Premium Coloring Dye (alcohol based) and it came out great. It did not seem to mobilize the dye - did leave color on the applicator but did not change the color on the Tea Light Candle  Holder that I was making.

Steve, I'm thinking that spray can of shellac has alcohol in it too.

Yes, but the spray dries quickly with little effect on the dye.

light coats ... start with light coats to minimize the mobilization and build a cover over the dye. Thumbs Up

The light coats is where I have difficulty with spraying.  The ol' saying, "If a little is good then a lot will be better" doesn't always work when you spray Shocked

Now, Ed.  Just because something is immoral does not mean it is illegal.

(Actually I love using dyes at times.) Shh.

Len, that's just one more reason why you are always just one small step away from being back on the list.  Grin

Ed.  I will have you know that on the rare occasion that I do use dyes.  I use them in the privacy of my own shop.  It's not like I am doing it in public.

I bet you used dyes to make your black list black. Grin Grin Grin

I would use mat or gloss Acrylic spray to set your dye or even multicoats and call it done.

Steve, another possible solution for you would be to get one of the small, cheap airbrush kits like this one Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register. You can use just about any liquid finishes in them, although many will need to be thinned. The reasons I suggest the airbrush are that:
1. You can use very low air pressure which will let you control the amount of finish you apply.
2. As long as you are not using the airbrush for any extended period, you should be able to capture most of the overspray (which will be minimal to start with) by spraying inside a cardboard box "spray booth".

I've used this method successfully many times when I wished to "stabilize" or "fix" something I had dyed or colored. Once your light spray coats have dried you can apply your wipe-on finishes without worry.
