Breck, are you implying that I am not the "future".

For anyone who has not been to a Symposium they are amazing. I guess since I am the lone turner In Cayman and no access to real woodworking stores.  That it might make it more exciting for me or possibly I am just easily excitable.  But there is a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be absorbed at one of these.  That and meeting some of WR friends in person makes it a great time.

Oh did I mention the Vendors are with all the toys!!!!

I hope to meet up with a lot of you this year.

I was extended an invitation to participate as a demonstrator by Kurt Hertzog and have accepted. I will be doing a total of 4 seminars on 2 topics. Details are going to be published soon in the AAW Journal I have been told.

Sorry...

That's ALOT of money for admittance.. $325?? Then there is the added expense of hotel, meals travel, etc.

Too rich for me.

I DO plan to attend the  NWA's Woodworkers Showcase in Saratoga Springs, NY At the end of March. Cheaper and closer for me. I can drive there in one day.

Anyone going there??

I asked the AAW a question on the money cost on part of the show and here's a copy/paste of the reply. Thanks for asking. The Trade Show, the Instant Gallery and all the exhibits are free and open to the public. You will enjoy them all!

See you soon,

The demos and the banquet are all that really require a ticket.  But, the demos are the best part of the symposium.

Lauren and I begin driving this afternoon.

Tomorrow night should be very interesting

At 7:00 p.m. she will be attending the Women In Turning meeting.

At the same time, I will be doing a 7 minute presentation as part of Rob Wallace's Gizmos and Gadgets session. I will be talking about using live video in woodturning projects (cool toys!)

I hope to see some of you there.

I am back home and rested after a great Pittsburgh Symposium. Those of you that have never attended one need to make a point to do so.  It a wonderful 4 days of turning information and knowledge.
The demonstrations were great with skills and tips by some of the top turners in the world sharing their knowledge.

And of course the Trade Show.  I was like a kid in a candy shop.  With an extensive list of vendors there every imaginable tool and gadget that can be used for turning was represented.

Our good friends Doug Thompson ( Thompson Lathe tools), Craig Jackson (Easy Wood Tools), Vince (Vince's Wood and Wonders I.E. the sand paper guy),  And last of course Robo Hippy with his great tool rests were all selling their wares.

I was able to meet/catch up with many of the members from WTR.  It is always great to renew friendships made online in person.

Jim has accused me on more than one occasion of going overboard on my symposium purchases.  JimQuarles wrote on Jun 29th, 2015 at 11:38am:

I will not say Jim is totally wrong, but you must remember I do not have any shops here in Cayman that sell anything even resembling turning tools.  So I do take advantage of the opportunity.  This year I had one of those small travelers digital scales with me so I could make sure that my bag was not too heavy for the airlines. I was bragging to Larry Machett at dinner on Sunday night that my bag weighed in safely below the limit of 50 lbs.  When I got to the check-in counter at the airport, the attendant at the  counter told me my bag was way over weight.  I told the fellow that could not be right as I checked it with my handy dandy scale.  He smiled at me and asked, "Did you have the scale set to pounds or kilos?'  Need I say more.  Angry Cheesy Lips Sealed

I am looking forward to the long weekend to play with the new toys.  Grin

I am already looking forward to Atlanta next year,

Cheers

Great symposium.  Had a great time with Len.  Bought way too many toys, thanks again to Len who talked me into some including a vacuum setup from Frugal.  Set it up today works great.  Of course you can't go by the Thompson booth without buy a bag full.  I did manage to get by the Robust booth with out buying a beauty.  Oh well next year.  One of the great things about the symposium is meeting folks you talk on the phone with like Vince and Don.  How do you not buy sandpaper with free goodies and more rubber chuckies with more free goodies.  Maybe next year I will take my truck.  The demos were terrific.  Learned a bunch of stuff and of course inspired to try new things.  Of course you have to buy the cool tools they use like MagicMark saw and a chatter tool and the list goes on.  The instant gallery was great and maybe next year I will participate.  Everything from great turned pieces to outrageous art pieces.  For those of you who are trying to break into the art market it is a great place to start.  I talked to a number of turners who were contacted by galleries to submit photos of their work.  Something for everyone.  Maybe next year WTR folks can meet for dinner one night or drinks or both.

link for saw.  Used by Binh Pho and Joey Richardson and others.  They also use the Proxon saw for larger cuts.  My carving and piercing projects are not on such a grand scale.  This saw will solve a problem I have been having.  One cannot have too many tools.

Set up my Frugal system yesterday.  I forgive you Len.
