PaPa Larry's Shop in Georgia
Feb 16th, 2015 at 3:06pm

Moved back from to Georgia from Florida about 3 years ago. Shop in Florida was one bay of a three car garage with everything on rollers. New house had an unfinished basement (one outlet and six light bulbs) and allowed me to start from scratch. Constructed or modified stud walls, wired 110/220 as required, insulated, installed drywall, lighting, and drop ceiling. Office and drafting table in with mechanicals. Display room and 1/2 bath. Very efficient cyclone dust collecting system installed. Floor is covered with interlocking foam mats. Easy to clean.

Larry,

Your shop is awesome! When we were over there it was as clean as a hospital operating room. Hard to believe you produce as much as you do without a spec of sawdust!  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I am the maid. Each tool is connected to the vacuum system, but this only grabs the fine stuff. Ex Navy, which is part of the clean-up mantra. Made a deal with the wife on not dragging the dirt upstairs. When turning I am usually standing I a mound of wood shavings. Retired from the semiconductor industry, worked in clean rooms. One spec of dust could cost millions, guess that carried over.

Thanks for all the positive replies. Vacuum system is built around a Clearvue 5 hp cyclone. Main lines are 6" and 4" drops to the individual tools except the tables saw and sliding compound mitre saw that are 6". Each tool is connected with a gate that is wired to turn the cyclone on when opened.

Since everyone asked/commented, the shop does get used.

What you can't see from the pictures is that the entire floor is covered in1/2" interlocking foam tiles!

That would be handy if you fall down a lot.   Smiley Smiley Smiley   And for the times you don't it is much easier on the feet.

Sweet shop Larry,

I love to get ideas from other shops I see. What I get from yours is that I should run out and by a new broom! I have been meaning to take some pics of mine since I just made space for a lathe but I would be to ashamed until I get rid of all the sawdust Sad

Job for tomorrow I guess...

Awesome shop Larry - I love the lighting, especially the natural light, I would not have guessed that to be a basement.

Wow!  Thumbs Up   That's a pretty amazing shop. Very well lit and organized.  you did a great job designing and building your shop.  I like the picture with the shavings on the floor.  Good to see chips flying.

My only concern would be what happens when I get a bad catch and kick a bowl off the lathe.  That window seems to be right in the line of fire.  I haven't had anything shoot off the lathe in some time but if I came to visit you, I would probably take out your window on the second cut with the gouge.  LOL.  I won't hold my breath waiting for an invitation.  Grin

Larry, THANK you. This past weekend, I went out to the shop and spent most of my time cleaning up. Then I turned a few bowls and cleaned up again. I can now walk through my shop.

Thanks again for the inspiration. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
