Selling without credit cards
Feb 28th, 2015 at 10:57pm

Starting to accumulate a lot of bowls and thought of doing craft shows or flee markets this year. My question is can one do it without credit cards? I really don't want to get into that if I don't have to. Also, what size bowls seem to be more popular? I am talking working bowls and not art.
Thanks and cheers, Oh, What seems to be a viable price range

Lee, My sales almost doubled when I started taking credit cards using the Square reader system with my smart phone.  No one carries checks anymore, and besides, I'm not sure I would trust them.  With a Square and a smart phone, you know instantly whether it is good.  Works with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express at the same 2.75% rate.  If people have to reach into their pocket and count out cash, they are less likely to buy and more likely to try to bargain you down, than if they can just wave plastic.

I have a Square Reader and love it. You swipe the card and the money goes to your bank account. Could not be any easier.

I use the square.  Did a slow show a couple of years ago. Customer wanted to purchase about $600 worth of stuff, but only had a credit card ... and needed to get to the airport to catch a plane.  I didn't have a credit card device ... missed the only sale of the day.

Got the square the next day.  Took five minutes.  It is free, low percentage rate and you are notified of the sale immediately through email.  Deposit is made next day.  Most of my sales are $50-$150.  In todays world people don't seem to carry a lot of cash.  I'd say that my sales are 90% charge.  If you are going to sell at shows you can't live without it.

Square sounds good. I assume you right out a receipt and if so what do you right on it?

Lee,  I'm with the others on the Square reader.  The square will send your customer a receipt via email.   I also have a receipt book handy in case they don't want to enter their email.  I just write the date, name of my business, what they purchased and the price and add "Thank you" and my signature.   Many times people don't want a receipt.

You don't need a smart phone, a tablet would do. Square lets you accept credit cards and will transmit the data later when it has access to the internet. The problem with this is if the card is not accepted you won't know until its to late.

I use NCR paper for receipts and I write the last 4 of the card number and the billing zip code for the card.  I had one time where the people were from out of town and the CC company asked for the zip code.

Lee, the Square basically has 3 ways that you can charge: 1) swipe card on smart phone or other wireless device; 2) swipe card and compile data on tablet and post when home on home network; or 3) take data-name, cc#, billing zip code and enter by hand when you have internet access.  The first two are 2.75% and the third method is 3.25%.  If you have to enter it by hand, I would also suggest getting a phone # in case there is a problem.  Like others have said, you will miss a lot of sales without the ability to take CC's.

Thanks all. I will contact Square today. I'll have to use a tablet and send it in when I get home. I know that doesn't check cards but were not talking a lot of money here. It will allow for more sales. I sold once before, not bowls, and found most only wanted to spend about ten bucks because that's about all they carried. I didn't do well and to sell I had to lower prices and almost give it away.
Cheers

Lee, Walgreens (and probably others) has the Square reader. I use it and like others have said, credit card sales are about 75% of my sales, though most of my shows are Art shows.

If you buy the reader locally, Square will credit $10 to your account when you first use it, but if you register on their web site, they will send it to you free.  Buying locally, you will pay sales tax, which Square does not reimburse.
