Need more shine
May 24th, 2015 at 6:04am

Good morning,
I have been using friction polish such as "Dr Woodshop's" and the "Myland" brand.  I'm still getting dull spots on some of my pieces, even after 4, 5 and 6 applications.

My question is, can "wipe on poly" be applied on top of these friction polishes and will that bring out an even shine?
Or, what would you suggest I do or use to get an even shine?

Thank you
Dick

Without a picture to see what you are doing or knowing the type of wood you are working with I'm only guessing that the dull spots are caused because that area is soaking up more finish than the areas around it. Adding additional coats helps.

Also, its been my experience that fiction finishes such as Myland's work best on spindles rather than bowls.

Friction polishes have a hard time on end grain.  I suspect that your challenge is with end grain effects and the more open the grain, the harder to get a shine from the friction polish.

The challenge with friction polishes is the wax in the mixture tends to weaken the bond of film finishes placed on top of them.   Separation generally does not happen at first, but the impact of dropping a piece can result in separation.

Wipe the surface well with a solvent such as mineral spirits to remove waxes.  A coat of shellac over the "dewaxed" friction polish will reduce the chance of the separation, and increase adhesion.

Then add your film finish and build it

Try applying a sanding sealer (I like Deft Lacquer thinned 50% with Deft Lacquer Thinner) to fill the pores so the end grain does not soak in the friction polish. It dries quickly and can be sanded back to provide a smooth even surface for the friction polish to go over.

As Ron mentioned, without more information or a picture one can only guess.

I always use a sanding sealer before either of those friction polishes.

Most friction polish has a wax ingredient. Poly will have a hard time sticking.
