Here's a guy who made a hollow segmented hollow top that hums:

It looks like he left a slot in the side of the body of the top.

I tried to contact him a couple of times but never got a response.   I suspect they are hollowed very thin and one edge would be sharpened like a whistle.  One direction it would hum or whistle, the other direction maybe not so well.  Something to experiment with.  Like blowing air over a pop bottle.

if you sell small tops what do you ask for them?  2 inch x 2 inch.

I don't really know, I'm just getting into selling myself.  Let's think about this a moment....What kind of top is 2X2?  Is it a finger top, spun by thumb and index finger?  I think I'll ask $3. but I sometimes paint or decorate them.      Is it a throwing top? Does it have a plastic or metal point?  Depending on how I might decorate it $7 to $10 maybe.   A top with a string and a launcher handle maybe $12 to $15?  That's starting to sound a little pricey.  I could go on to segmented ones, huge ones, tops with bearings.   Check this site for top parts.  I've ordered from there and got good service.

I usually sell them for $4.   I've seen them from $3-7.  Ironically the $3 were probably some of the nicer turned ones.  They were a dark wood with a light colored spindle and very thin, maybe a shade over an eighth inch thick.

Yes they are finger tops.  different kinds of wood made from leftovers. 1/8 inch shaft and turned thin.   Some times painted, dyed or textured.  I use them to attract kids so the parents stop to watch them play with them and maybe buy a bowl.  Sometimes it works.  I use them as a give away.  $1 ea.  I am planning on burning my name into them and use them as business  cards.  Around here they do not sell for much if you can find them.

At a recent craft/art show I sold $90 worth of the little buggers.  The thumb finger type.  I decorate mine with a couple of colors using magic marker type markers.  I have been selling them for $3 ea or 2 for $5.   One lady bought 14 and said each of the grand kids would get one in their stocking at Christmas.  I get a kick when Mom lays down $5 and tells 2 kids to pick one.  The debate is on! What color, and which is the best spinner.  I use maple almost exclusively.  It has the right "heft", is straight grained and I can usually find maple "shorts" for not much money

Like a whistle, air must go in and out, this usually means minimum two holes. The size and position of the holes will determine the sound generated

The referee's whistle with the ball in it only has one hole.
So does a soda pop bottle, when you blow across it.
Not that I am an expert on whistles. but a one holer can be done.
If you want to play nore than one note, different story.

John, a referees whistle has two holes in it, the one you blow in and the one that lets the air escape out the top.

I've looked a three of Lindykate's whistling tops.  I only see one slot in each one.  I guess it's time to make my own and see what it takes.  I tried once.  I think it was to thick and to rough on the inside.        I see a challenge and trade possibility.

If not 2 holes, one hole and an air chamber is typically required.
(like the one in Guy's link)
