I have a source of some sweet gum rounds that are about 24". The wood looks like pretty plain, white wood. How is it for turning?

Yours is white?? Ours here in GA usually has a lot of color, really pretty browns & such. I haven't turned it personally but it's a pain to dry - when we cut blanks they tend to crack pretty quickly. Best of luck w/ it!

Soft. If it is just plain white, take it out into the yard, stand on end, and cover for about a month. It spaults easily, and the black lines in the white wood look pretty nice. Most of ours out here is pretty plain.

It is my best selling wood for large salad bowls, like robo said it spalts easily but you need to rough turn before it gets punky. Even when it is plain it darkens to a beautiful tan and sands so easily. I love turning it. Thumbs Up

I saw what Elisabeth has and it's full of color. Dark browns and tans.

I love Sweat Gum.  It has a range of wood colors though.  White usually down towards the bottom and changes to various shades of yellow further up.  Enjoy it!

Might as well turn it.
It is junk for everything else.

I have turned it some, and turns and finishes easily.

I turn a fair amount of sweet gum.
Turns and sands easily, but tears out easily like most softwoods of tools are not crazy sharp.
Slow drying will help with cracking.
