Finishing cloth preference for friction finish/polish...
Sep 22nd, 2015 at 11:21pm

My question is what is you preference in finishing cloth when applying a friction finish , I have used drop cloths ,old  t- shirts , even some of the old red shop rags - I am curious does anybody have a preference to apply a friction polish ?

Toilet paper or paper towel.

I never use true fabric on things that are spinning in the lathe - I am attached to my fingers and prefer that they remain attached to me.

I use small 3-4" pieces of COTTON t-shirt material.  Anything larger has a chance of taking a finger off.  Do NOT use polyester or other manmade material, as it can melt from the heat needed by the friction polish and melt into the surface.

Ditto on the small pieces of cloth.  Also, knits like t-shirt fabric tend to shed less fiber from the cut edges, and all cotton fabric seems to work best for applying friction polish.  Wool works well for buffing down waxes.

My wife's flannel night gown, cut into 3 inch wide x 4 inch long patches. Also works good for gun bore patches.

Paper towel is actually equal to approx. 1200 grit sandpaper - works VERY well for polishing and buffing.

I use soft cotton bed sheets (but not felt or silk). Cut the strips wider for polish than CA. One sheet last a long time.  I also use sheets for cleaning guns because felt may unravel and enter the works from the hammer slot and jam or cause a delayed discharge. It will also stick in the CA when applying it. I put a drop or three on the sheet held over my finger tip and wipe it back and forth. It leaves a smooth layer, requiring much less sanding.

Best answer yet. You have to have a cooperating wife though.

I use white paper shop rags from SAMs. Comes in a boxed in a large roll. Just pull out what you need. Same texture as blue shop towels
