Hi all, just joined this forum and am excited to gain some knowledge in purchasing a new lathe and doing some turning! In the process of finishing my new shop now, so i have a few months before purchasing. New to wood turning, but have a fair amount of experience with metal turning..... Thanks for the great forum!!!!

Welcome. Just know that wood turning is very different then metal work. Precision here is anything that looks like what you had in mind. When ready to buy, let us know what type of turnings you would like to get into and we'll be glad to offer suggestions.  Wish I had been on here before I bought my lathe.

Welcome Ryan.  Fill in your profile, you may find another member nearby who could help as a mentor.  There are about 10 members in my area.

Thanks guys, filled out my profile and have been spending a lot of time on here trying to take it all in. What lathes are you all currently using? What are your opinions on the Robust lathes? Thanks again.....

Robust lathes are among the best available.

I've been using a Jet 1220VS for the last 7 years.

Welcome from SE Texas!
I don't have a Robust---but there are lots of others that work too.

One brand I would stay away from is Grizzly. They make very good flat stock machines (I have 3) but his lathes leave  a lot to be desired. And yes, I have one.

Ryan-
I have 3.  Mostly 'cause I like to have than one thing at a time going & not change out things, plus  they were deals I couldn't pass on.
#1: a Nova 1624- a great lathe!
#2: a Vega 1447-liked the way it looked and works really well
#3: a Laguna 18/47- newest one to me, love the variable speed and size capability.
I have capability to turn larger than 18 inches, but likely won't--not a big market for that around me.

Hi Ryan, Welcome aboard!  I too am in the market for a new lathe.  I started a thread in the Tool Talk section.  Be sure to check it out.  There is a lot of good information.  I am pretty much set on the Jet 1642 2 HP.  As my buddy Glenn said above, I would stay away from Grizzly.  Their quality seems to be hit or miss.  Jet and Nova are both great machines.  Its just matter of preference and what fits what you want to do.

Cool, how about tooling? Anyone use the replaceable carbide tipped versions?

I am a great fan of the Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  They are not a complete replacement for traditional tools, but they have a very short learning curve.
