Segmenting chart or calculator.
Nov 3rd, 2015 at 7:23am

I just bought four of the Segeasy wedges. Instead of making one jig that is variable for all of the angles, I am making one dedicated to each of the angles. I am pretty happy with the way they turned out. Pictures to follow.

I tried a search but could not find exactly what I was looking for. Is there a chart or a calculator to determine the diameter of the circle that any given segment will produce. I know that the width of the wood is a variable that will change the inside diameter, but I am more interested in being able to determine the outside diameter based on the length of the segment, with some measure of accuracy.

That said, what is the width of the wood that most of you use. I was playing with some 1 1/2" stock and that seemed to be pretty good.

Russ,
Are you trying to mix different wedge angles in a single ring?  Ie like Jerry has demo.

Our you talking about 1 1/2 inch is that from outside diameter to inside. or the ring height?  If the first I use 1 - 1 1/4 inch along the diameter and about 3/8 thick(ring height).

I was playing with 1" X 2" poplar stock from Home Depot.  I didn't want to practice on anything good yet.

I had not thought of that yet, but the idea is intriguing.

One thing I would like to add is once you choose a way of determining your segment size.  Do not mix with other chart, calculators or even pencil and paper.  Each of these might give different results which will impact your segments, rings and bowl or vessel.

I thought the whole idea with the Segeasy was the fact that one fixture could do ALL segments, thus reducing having to make multiple jigs.

This is true unless you are making compound segments.  Which can but cut on the same jig but leave an mitered cut.
