Just saying hello.
Nov 14th, 2015 at 5:22pm

Just bought my first wood lathe last friday. It's not much, just a harbor freight 8x12, 1/3 hp. I already like to build furniture so a lathe seemed like the next logical tool. Never tried turning before so $120 was all I was willing to spend for something I might not like doing. I assembled it that night and turned my first piece of wood the next day. Took a scrap yellow pine 2x2 and turned a small bat. Just big enough to carry in my back pocket. I started a turned box this past week. Discovered I can't do much without a chuck. So, I just ordered a 4 jaw Nova chuck. Can't wait for it to get here. I think i'm hooked cause I already have several more turning projects bouncing around in my head.

A local turning group/club can be an excellent resource.  Often they offer demos, classes, and mentoring.  If/when you decide to try a bowl, make sure you are using a bowl gouge on the inside - too much stress that can snap spindle gouge at the handle.

Unbelievable collection of videos here that don't show unsafe or poor practices.
