I'd try walnut shells. You don't want to pick sand out of wood!

I would also like to know ideas on a blasting booth.  Is this better to buy or build?

What are other requirements?
Media to use?
pressures used?
CFM requirements for compressor?

I really like the natural textures that are brought out by blasting....

Just like everything else around here, it all depends.
What wood you're blasting
What end result (effect) you want.
How powerful is your compressor

Depends on how good you are with tools  Grin
You can definitely save money building one yourself and to you own specific specs.
Really all a booth does is keep the media contained and collects it for re-use. they're really not that special

Tom I bought a free standing sand blasting Harbor Freight cabinet it is a perfect way to sand blast individual pieces up to a pretty big piece the cabinets are inexpensive when you have a 20% coupon compared to real brands. Just a thought.

And you can get Walnut shells for your blasting grit.  It is safer than the dust from sand.

Do NOT use any silica product.  Extremely dangerous.  Silicosis is nothing to mess with.  Yes it is called sand blasting but you must never use sand or silica products.  Always use a respirator when using a blasting cabinet.  When sand blasting wood you are going to make a lot of fine dust, make sure you have dust collection hooked up to your cabinet.

A cheap bench-top cabinet is frustrating as the pan is so shallow that the media does not flow to the bottom and the pick-up tube runs dry. The gloves they provide also dry rot in a very short period.  You also need a big enough compressor that can deliver high volume at high pressure otherwise you are just spraying media with no cutting action. You can do it in short blasts  and wait until the pressure builds but that is also a pain.

You want an enclosed cabinet that is air tight and glass beads or walnut hulls. A GOOD compressor with CFM and volume. The worst thing to happen is to run out of air.

Want a real laugh?  I just got home from work and found an email from HF with a coupon for their 40# Floor stand Sand Blast cabinet, $200 off the normal $350 price.
