Posts: 232 Beacon, ny New York USA	Hook/Loop Sanding Discs Dec 23^rd, 2015 at 10:23am Does anyone have a technique to maintain or restore the backing of sanding discs? The hook side is clean but the loop side is frayed and no longer sticks to the hooks. I'm not sure what to do and don't want to make it worse. Thanks, Jenn

You mean that the sticking side is wearing out before the working side? That's unusual - my experience is exactly the opposite. I use Vince Welsh's blue-flex discs - what brand are you using?

It is a matter of wear, or are the loops getting clogged with dust? If its dust and you have compressed air available, you could try blasting it out.

I don't know of any way to restore the reverse. Perhaps a way of managing the problem is to set aside the discs with worn-out backing for hand sanding.

I had some no name discs years ago where the backing on the discs would come loose. Other than that, no problems. I guess there could have been some if I sanded way past the life of the abrasives. I did have some, especially 1 inch discs that wouldn't stick, but it was the hooks on the mandrill, not the loop on the disc. The hooks can feel like they are still there, but if the discs are coming loose, I would guess it is the interface pad...

Another vote for Vince.

I have had some discs that didn't want to hold onto the "micro' style hook but would work/stick enough to be used on the standard style

I use 2" Hi-Per Green Discs in the wave shape from Packard.

"The edge overhangs the holder by 1/4" to prevent the disc from digging into the turning. This shape also makes it easier to touch up trouble spots on a work piece while the lathe is stopped. They feature heavy J-Flex cloth backing for toughness and flexibility. The Green Wave discs that fit the 2" hook and loop holder measure 2-1/2" in diameter while the Green Wave discs for the 3" holder measure 3-1/2" in diameter."

For me, the hook side is great. It's the soft side that gets frayed and no longer sticks to the hook side.

They delaminate very fast! Use them for hand sanding and move to another brand

How many minutes of sanding are you trying to get out of one disk?

The 3 inch discs are 3 3/8 inch diameter, and lap over the edge of the pads. They cut longer and better than just about any other disc out there, and the ones I tried that came close cost over twice as much. robo hippy

This can cause the hook to soften and not grab. You'll then have a perfectly good sanding disc that won't grab. DAMHIKT

It could be that heat built up and made the velcro ineffective. Dont ask me how i know this happens... 😤. Slow down the lathe and dont press so hard with the power sander (drill motor). Good luck
