DIY Mobile base for Powermatic 3520 lathe
Dec 27th, 2015 at 9:46pm

I recently purchased an used PM3520 but needed a mobile base.  I did not want to pay over $350 for the mobile base that is sold on line.  Here is what I made for about $40.  I had 3 of the 4 casters which is why my cost was so low.

Looks interesting. The pictures are too small for me to see much detail though. Do you raise and lower the machine one wheel at a time ?

Are the rods / nuts a stabilizer, stiffener or what ?

Did you drill holes in the lathe legs to attach your setup ?

The pictures came out small because I had to reduce their size because of this sites limitations. I raise and lower both wheels (on one side) simultaneously.  The threaded rods and nuts pinch the square tube and hold it in place.  Did not drill into the legs.  All the holes are drilled into the square tube.

I just remembered; I posted this on the Lumberjacks website. Larger and nice photos.  That site allows for much large photos.  It's in the FORUMS.

Julian,

You can reduce the "size" of the picture with out Having to make it so small in size.  You can reduce the resolution while leaving the size larger.   Check out  PIXresizer  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

I used a jack to lift one side of my Powermatic 3520 to put 2 wheels on at a time.  Wheels lock and unlock.  From Zambus.

Don’t remember what I paid but it didn’t hurt.

Easier and cheaper than a mobile base.

Alan, those look like some heavy duty casters.   Do you foresee any issue with only having such a few threads in the nut?  From the pic it looks like there are only a couple of bolt threads in it.

Good eye. I wish the bolt were a bit longer but so far no issues.  I don’t move the lathe too far.

Thread engagement notwithstanding, I think that type of caster is perfect for machinery in that the wheel is completely out of the load when the foot is deployed. Much more stable than conventional locking casters.
The thought of crawling around to re-engage the wheels makes my tender knees ache, however. Definitely for a younger (or fitter!) person.   Smiley

You motivated me to email and they gave me specs so I’ll get longer bolts at Home Depot!
