Embellish or not?
Dec 28th, 2015 at 2:57pm

Here are before and after pics of what will most likely be my last finished piece for 2015.

Rainbow Poplar vase, 9" h x 9" w. When I got done, it seemed a bit long in the neck, so I took it upstairs to my wife's studio, gave it to her and asked her what she thought.

A few minutes later she brought it back down to the shop and showed me the embellishments that she had added.

Comments?

By the way, the item she added was a "bone" bracelet that she got at a garage sale for 0.50.

Without the bracelet/embellishment the neck looks to thin, JMO

Interesting comments, but the picture doesn't do it justice. The flash created a shadow. Also being able to see the design on the bone shapes is more impressive as the bone design picks up the natural design in the wood.

Wow looks like another husband and wife team is born! I absolutely love what you two have created. Her addition has truly embellished your work and made it stand out better. Thumbs Up

I prefer the addition because it does not distract from the beauty of the turning.

Overall, I like embelishments because most of the wood that I get is rather bland.  It needs a little something to give it some ZIP.

In this case the wood and finish you have looks good, but I find the color tones of the add complement the colors of the turning and it somehow makes the neck of the turning more in proportion

Thanks VERY much for posting this interesting comparison of the two views.  I have learned a lot from this discussion, both about turning and about my own preferences. Thumbs Up

It's like putting a diamond necklace on a beautiful woman, does she need it ,not really ,but the diamond puts her over the top.Trying to put into words, like when you put your two fingers to your lips and while pulling away sound a kiss ,em,perfecto !!!
