This is a piece of fiddleback maple that I dyed black, sanded back, and then dyed red. The finish is WOP and then has been Beall buffed. The finial and pedestal are ebonized cherry.  It is 8"W x 1"H (including finial and pedestal).  My picture is not as good as I would like, it still has some reflection/glare that I would like to get rid of.  C&C welcome.

Awesome piece Steve.  Thumbs Up
I did notice something and I had to look again and again to find what it was.  The detail on the base and the detail on the finial may benefit being the same profile. Like I said I had to look again and again to find out what was twigging me.
JMHO.

The detail on the top of the finial has very crisp edges with enough space to see light through making it appear much lighter. The same detail on the base appears to have blunt edges and not as deep. Maybe it is just the angle of the picture.
In any case what a wonderful turning, great job.   Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Thanks Bert and Glenn for your kind words.

Bert, you are correct in observing that the details on the top and the bottom are not quite the same.   Like you are saying, the top detail is deeper and better defined.  I got a little nervous (read scared Grin) that I would mess the whole thing up, again  Cry  This was my second attempt at the pedestal  Embarrassed, so I decided better safe than sorry.  Other than that,  I worked really hard to try and get the two pieces to match. I watched one of Cindy Drozda's DVDs and found it to be very helpful in the area of tool technique and in creating the design.

This piece is going to be in an auction for one of the area artists coalition's fundraising galas. I'm hoping it will bring in some good money for the group, and myself, since I do get a percentage of the final sales price Grin. So last night I took it to an open house that the gallery I'm part of to show the other gallery members. The other members of the gallery really liked it. Several of them commented about how delicate it looked and then added they would be afraid that if they owned it that it would get knocked over and broke Cry. Hopefully, not everyone will have that fear at the gala's auction.

Beautiful work!

What technique did you use to ebonize the cherry?

Randy, I've used a couple of different methods, so I'll share them with you and you can decide what works best for you.

1.  India ink
2.  Fiebing's Leather Dye--USMC Black--least favorite
3.  Chestnut Spirit Stain--Black (sold thru Wood World of Texas)
4.  Black Sharpie and then a coating of black Chestnut Spirit Stain

I know there are other methods out there but these are the ones that I have tried.  Of the 4, I like the 4th one the best.  The Sharpie does a good job of staining the wood and then the Chestnut stain evens it out nicely.

The other key for me is to burnish the object after it has been stained.  I take a  folded Viva paper towel to accomplish this.  Of course, this is all done while the object is still on the lathe.  The real key is to make sure you don't let the towel get caught around your turnings as it is being burnished. It "might" cause your finial or pedestal to break. (The breaking part is only bases on what others have told me Roll Eyes

Steve, thanks so much for sharing.  I will have to try some of your techniques.  The only thing I have used before was steel wool dissolved in vinegar.  Different woods had varying results.

Again, your work is beautiful and inspiring.   Thumbs Up

Randy, the dye staining process is really very simple.  Just have to make sure you're wearing gloves when you apply the dye Embarrassed Embarrassed

As a side note, they had an opening for the art items that are to be auctioned off at the gala.  Much to my surprise and joy, the Red Planet took best of show, which included a nice little check to go along with the certificate. Thumbs Up
