Diameter X Pi = the length of the board needed to make a particular sized ring.

The number of segments per ring and construction style (economy or grain-matching) usually dictates how long a piece needs to be.
Jim's formula is correct but it's just the beginning. You need to allow for the kerf of the blade and if there are waste cuts to figure into it as well.
There's no simple answer

Consider purchasing a program like Wood Turner Pro.

It is simple to use.  The cut list summary gives to board lengths (economy and grain match).

for me it was well worth the investment if you are going to get into segmented bowl making.

I agree with Mike about using a software program for calculating cut lists, segments and rings. You can do this without speeding the money but you need to like (and be accurate at) math. The amount of time and wasted material saved is well worth the price. IMO

Whether you use software or old fashioned pencil and paper, I find it's a good idea to add a certain amount for unforeseen problems. How much you add (10%-15% for example) is up to you and usually is determined by your skill level.

Thanks Guys, I downloaded Woodturner Pro yesterday for the thirty day trial. After I printed out my first cut list I feel a bit more confident as to how to get started. Thanks Again Dave C

The size of the wood is dictated by the effect you are trying for.  Some are complicated requiring planning and precise measurements.  Other you can do in your sleep.  Here is an example of complicated.
