finish on cherry
Mar 20th, 2016 at 1:26pm

Just curious.  What would be the best route to go?  Finished a cherry bowl with danish oil and let cure.  Top with thinned shellac or just go with a application of beeswax and no shellac, or finish with both.  All information will be appreciated.

How do you expect it to be used?

  Probably just a decorative piece.

You might consider another coat of Danish oil and once dry then wax and buff.  Should give a pretty good gloss finish.

My experience with Danish oil is a bit different - even with four or five coats it never approached even a semi gloss sheen, likely because of the oil component.  I'd expect no better than a matte sheen from one or two coats of Danish oil, so any shine will have to be from waxing.  And wax will hold up well for a decorative piece that is only dusted occasionally.  Personally I have no experience with wax but have often read that some are harder than others.  I would expect a harder wax would buff to a higher sheen, but again no experience.

Bees wax is pretty soft. I buff with the Beall system which uses carnauba wax which is very hard and does produce a mice sheen.

Hey Don.  Thats my experience also.  My piece has about 4 coats of oil.  Not buffed yet, but it looks like i will get a nice matte finish from the oil.  Thanks for all the info guys!

+1  on the Beall system.  Your 4 coats of oil should buff up to more than a matte finish, at least semi-gloss.

Danish oil CAN get to a really "deep" finish, but it takes a LOT of layers to get there.  I have a blanket chest that has in the neighborhood of a dozen or more coats rubbed into it over the course of a couple weeks.   it never "glosses" but it did develop a "soft" shine, sort of semi-gloss type surface to it.  since it's a blanket chest, i didn't want a full hard glossy finish so it was appropriate.   However, the time spent waiting between coats would make this a poor choice for turned work...    Being a mix finish, once it's cured, you should be able to use a higher gloss finish on it (something like a "friction polish" )

Love turning cherry! If just decorative, I use 2 coats of sanding sealer, then 2-3 coats of wipe-on-poly, wet sanding between coats.

One coat of Danish Oil, followed by 3 or 4 coats of Waterlox Original in satin. Lovely.
