Lacquer over Danish Oil or Teak Oil

I have a Elm Burl natural edge bowl that has amazing figure in it.  I want to put the oil finish on it to bring out the figure of the grain.  I also want to have a high gloss finish when I get done.  Has anyone put spray can Lacquer (Mohawk) over an oil finish?  How did it turn out?  Is there any tricks to making the spray finish adhere and dry properly?

I would recomend that the oil be allowed to completely dry or cure first. Try it on some scrap first.

Instead of using danish or teak oil why not try using a high gloss oil finish?

What kind of high gloss oils are available? 

Put a call into Mohawk and got routed over to their technical support specialist and he said that using one coat of Danish oil would be fine as a sealer coat followed up with scuff coat sanding to ruff up the surface for the Lacquer to adhere to.  He did see a problem if you built up the oil finish and then tried to spray on the lacquer.

I have wet sanded with walnut oil and let the oil fully cure for several weeks.  I then sprayed with Deft lacquer with no problems so far. Have only tried this once.   I also have had good luck with oil base Wipe on Poly on top of walnut oil or tung oil.  I would also consider Beall buffing the oil-only surface, which shines up nicely for a different (softer) look.

Here in Ohio I can buy quarts of Pratt & Lambert 38 alkyd varnish in gloss.  I mix 50-50 with mineral spirits and easy as pie to wipe on and wipe off 3 coats per day.

Commercially prepared Danish Oils like Watco can be lacquered over easily after the equivalent of 3 days at 70 degrees.  Wait a week and you will be plenty safe.  Homemade mixes have unpredictable drying curves, so a little more time may be needed. A week is generally enough for BLO.  Teak oil I have no experience lacquering.

Ditto on what Alan said.

My wife uses Danish oil on all of her marquetry pieces before she applies lacquer as her finish coat(s).
