Advise for ring glue up
Apr 4th, 2016 at 4:18pm

I have been playing around making more complex rings but the hardest part is the glue up.  I normally use hose clamps but half the small maple pieces slide towards the center when tightening the hose clamp. See photo.  This ring also has pieces of black veneer that have a tendency to slide.  On the second ring I glued sections by hand and then a second glue up with a hose clamp.  Anyone have a suggestion.

With that type of segment arrangement you really need to glue up pairs first and then you can glue up the 16 pairs at once if you want.

I agree with Ed, I would glue up in quarters.

What Ed and Ron said, it just takes a little bit longer...

May I ask where in the piece this ring will be?

I haven't decided yet; possibly near the center of a vase.

The reason I asked is because the extra effort of cutting the small maple segments at opposing angles may not give much of a visual effect.

If placed in an area of the profile that doesn't have much curve to it, it may simply look like straight spacers of different widths. (which can be accomplished much more easily)

If it's placed in an area where the curve is tighter, then the top and/or bottom of the small maple segments may vary in width producing a nice effect. either narrow at the top and bottom and wide in the center or visa-versa.

This ring has a good look to it, you might consider using it for the rim so that the alternating maple segments have more of an impact visually.
Please let us know how it turns out

Thanks for the input.  I made 2 of these rings.  I'll use one for the top rim of a bowl.  Not sure about the other.  I made these rings as a test in cutting "complimentary pairs".

I agree with Ed, unless this design ring is the top of the vessel all your work will be for nothing as the diameter of triangle section will be the same or close to it.  I have made compound wedges that as you reduce the outer diameter the triangle grows in size.  Leaving small triangles on the outside and larger ones on the inside.
