gold for worm holes and defects
Apr 13th, 2016 at 8:51am

I have been using coffee grounds and different colored sands for filling defects and worm holes.
I have some spalted Elm that needs something gold colored.
I can not find any golden sand and my brass key shavings are just not right.
Is there anything i am missing as a gold substitute?

Check out Pearl ex embossing powders.  They come in a wide range of colors and are easily mixed with epoxy.  You can even swirl different colors together.

Could you be more specific?
Is the color wrong?
Is the grain the wrong size?

I use metal flake- any color you want. Get the smallest flakes, they work better. The darker gold would look like panned gold. Mix in A side of epoxy first.

Look on Amazon for MICA.  Comes in a lot of colors.  Mix with either epoxy or thick CA

You could check out the metallic powders and sands from WoodWorldTX. They have just expanded the line with Jimmy Clewes as the 'pitch man'. Use these with epoxy or CA glue.

They also have some cream based grain fillers that are very good. Probably not for filling voids or worm holes but perfect for open grain woods like ash.
