salad bowl finish and end grain (Read 873 times)

Paul St Onge Junior Member Offline WR Rocks! Posts: 41	salad bowl finish and end grain May 1^st, 2016 at 4:08pm Is it me or does salad bowl finish highlight end grain. What are the solutions to even out the absorption of the finish on the project? Been let down twice while using this. All help is appreciated. Thanks!

What type/brand of salad bowl finish are you using and on what species of wood. As always a picture would help understand what you're concerns are.

The finish will penetrate far into end grain wood, and tends to appear darker. That's the nature of end grain. You could try a thinned out first coat as a sealer and let it dry completely for a day or two, and then a final coat. That may help.

To paraphrase Chris, it's not the wood or the finish, it's the procedure. You most likely just put on a quick FIRST coat and called it good. Next time really soak the wood with the first coat. Slowly keep putting on finish until the end grain does not take any more. This may take 1/2 hour or more. Then let it set a few minutes and if it still looks ok, wipe off the excess and let the first coat dry for a day or more. Then add coats until you reach the desired look.
