how do i lock the drive
May 4th, 2016 at 4:22pm

i am new to turning and got a walker turner driver lathe cheap to try. my question is how do i lock the drive so i can thread chucks on etc.? i dont see any kind of lock, there is a hole going thru the head toward pulley but it just has tiny holes in it so dont think that would ever work?

thanks ed

could stick something into the hole and into the little holes on the pulley but the holes are tiny and wouldnt hold much pressure dont think.

Try holding onto the pulley to screw/unscrew the chuck, faceplate. Squeasing the belt may place enough pressure to hold the shaft from turning.

Those are indexing holes and are not for locking the headstock. A lot of the older lathes don't have locking devices. Perhaps a rubber strap wrench around the pulley or something on the outboard end.

You could consider making an outboard clamp ring. Get a machinist to make a steel ring with size on size bore, then cut into the center hole, then drill a hole through the collar with threads left on only one side of the cut, then use an Allen head bolt to tighten the collar on the outboard shaft. The outer rim could then have a barring hole drilled in it to accept a small bar which could be long enough to lever against the table. Old school but it could work. Could also add a wooden hand wheel to use for manual turning the spindle.
Good luck and turn safe.
