A while ago I got some aniline wood dye from a cabinet maker who was going out of business, this dye is Spirit soluble. Does that mean like paint thinner or does that mean alcohol?

"Mineral spirits" are petroleum based. However, I have heard Limeys use the term "spirits" as referring to alcohol as in a "spirit stove". If the language used does not add the word Mineral, I would assume that you were dealing with alcohol.

I would suggest you ask Lee Valley Tools. They sell aniline dye.
