What should I make my dad for Father's Day?
May 31st, 2016 at 1:13pm

I made a vase for my mom, and now Father's Day is coming up. I'd like to turn something for him on the lathe. I've already given him a nice pen. And he is a woodworker, himself, with a much nicer shop than what I have. Any ideas on a turning project that would maybe be useful for a fellow woodworker?

How about the 2 of you do something together. You could both work on a turning so it would be a special piece. Thumbs Up

Thanks, Ralph. We actually do that nearly every day. I'm over there for a couple hours every evening. Right now we're working on a jig to cut logs on the bandsaw, then we're going to make a wedgie sled! But that's a good suggestion.

Wood Mallet?

Ron... That is actually not a bad idea. Any suggestions on material, design, etc.? Maybe something very  durable but that would still stand out in appearance?

Thanks, Ron. I wanted to do something a bit different and also work with a wood I hadn't worked with before. I ended up going with lignum vitae. It is very dense and, as I understand it, will last a long time. I really am enjoying working with this wood, and I think it will result in a great mallet.

Any suggestions on finishing for this wood or for this type of project is welcome.

I will post pictures when it is complete.

Lignum vitae doesn't need any finish. In fact its so oily a finish won't adhere. Just sand to a high grit and you will be fine.

This wood is used as ship's propeller shaft bearings.

Glad you found a great idea.  I was going to suggest a 14" bowl for popcorn . . .
