Dead & Dying trees
Jun 23rd, 2016 at 9:23am

Some reports have been recently released stating the staggering number of trees dead and/or dying due to drought here in California. Anyone who works with wood should be aware of this.
A few big numbers are, 26 million trees have died in the Sierra since October, this moves the grand total to 66 million.

The dead and dying trees are also a perfect habitat for the bark beetle which adds to the problem along with dry fuel for wildfires.
Just google, CA dead trees.
Since this is still going on, the impact is not fully known but IMO it will be many years before the situation turns around.

They say WI has 850 million ash trees, and they're pretty much all on death row due to the EAB.  Not sure how long it will take.  I still got one huge American Elm, and they started to go in the 60's.

I have ~150 ash trees on my five acres in SE Wisconsin, and they need to start coming down.  Some are almost dead already.

Yours aren't dead/dying from drought, are they?
I have family in central WI.

Tony, I've got a number of ash trees also, and several are not looking too good.  Too much for the lathe, so lots of nice firewood.
Ed, not sure about Tony's area, but we've had plenty of rain this year.  Everything is growing like crazy...except the tamaracks I got from "up north".  Don't think they like the heavy red clay soil around here.

I was up in your area last Aug/Sept and I think you received more rain that week than I did all last winter.
We're just getting a double hit, drought and Bugs.

No - I'm sure it's the beetle - they are very symptomatic - lots of bark stripped off by woodpeckers going after the bugs, and lots of (edited out) on the lower part of the tree because of the stress of the beetles.

No drought here - not this year.
