Hickory......Any finished turnings to show?
Jul 6th, 2016 at 2:11pm

I have a chance to get a bunch of 4"x4" by 8' dried
hickory but have to drive a ways to get it. I haven't turned it or have seen any turnings and wondering how you all like it. I would use it for boxes and mills.
Thanks,

I used hickory in a segmented bowl with alternating segments of hickory and walnut. It was great. I really liked the grain effect I got. One big problem I ran into though was that I used pieces where sap wood showed up. The sapwood bled into the walnut. If I were doing it over, I would just avoid the sapwood. The rest of it was fine.
I had made the same bowl twice before, once using ash and the other time using maple, and they turned out fine.

You may have already made your decision, but here is a recent hickory bowl (roughly 10 inch) that I completed from wood that was cut fall of 2014.

Here are three, I have found hickory can run from a plain light color to these with the stunning grain patterns. Hickory bowls sell very well for me.

Very nice pieced Tony and Breck. These are 4x4's and I don't think I want to take the drive to take the chance.
