Help with IDing wood
Aug 18th, 2016 at 10:00pm

I've been asked to duplicate this offering plate for a small church to replace one that was broken.  They said it was walnut, but to me it looks more like oak that has been stained.  I had thought maybe ash but the side view looks like oak.  (Also I've seen more oak in churches than walnut.)

What is your opinion?  Thanks.

I'd also say oak with stain.

Definitely oak.

Look at the end grain to determine if its white or red oak.

Red oak has open pores, almost like little straws, white oak has closed pores.

If I had to guess, from the photos and because its from a church, I'd bet its 3 layers of 4/4 white oak.

Bill I used to make furniture from red oak and then stain it dark walnut. This is what you have here, oak then stained dark walnut. The combination is striking and that is why the combination was used so much over the years. Thumbs Up

If oak, you should be able to see medullary ray ribbons on the end grain.

You might consider testing a finishing schedule on whatever wood you decide on before beginning the turning.
